How to sow wildflower seeds

Whether you've picked up a pack of our free wildflower seeds or are simply looking for expert guidance, these easy steps will help you create a vibrant, pollinator-friendly haven in your garden.

1. Choose the right spot

Pick a sunny area in your garden with well-draining soil. Wildflowers thrive in most soil types, but they’ll do best in a spot that isn’t too rich or heavily fertilised

2. Prepare the ground

Remove any weeds, grass, or large stones from the area. Loosen the soil with a rake or fork to create a fine, crumbly surface. Wildflowers don’t need deep planting, so avoid digging too much.

3. Mix the seeds

For even coverage, mix your seeds with dry sand or compost. This makes it easier to spread them evenly across your chosen area and prevents overcrowding.

4. Sow the seeds

Scatter the seed mixture thinly over the soil. There’s no need to bury them—just press them down gently with your hands or a board to ensure good contact with the soil.

5. Water gently

After sowing, give the area a light watering with a fine spray. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first few weeks, to help the seeds germinate. Avoid overwatering, as wildflowers prefer a natural growth cycle.

6. Let nature take over

Once the seeds sprout, they’ll grow at their own pace. Remove any fast-growing weeds that appear, and enjoy watching your wildflowers bloom! Over time, they’ll attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden.
