St Michael's Street
A lovingly restored garden in Folkestone’s St Michael’s Street, transformed into a wildlife-friendly, productive space rooted in authenticity.

Rob and Katy are renovating their St Michael’s Street home with care, using authentic processes and materials in keeping with the age of the property. The same ethos extends to their garden. Both keen gardeners and produce growers, they asked us to turn what was once a wasteland into a functional, wildlife-friendly space that could also act as a blank canvas for their planting.
Sustainability shaped every decision. We minimised what came in or out of the site, instead reusing what was already available. A nearby felled tree was repurposed into a stumpery; branches from overhanging conifers became natural path edging; conifer clippings were used as mulch; and even discarded concrete blockwork was recycled to create paths through a newly planted orchard. For boundary treatments, we used woven willow hurdles - simple, natural fencing that glows beautifully in the sunlight and complements the planting.
The garden spans three levels. The lowest is complete: a wilder area, threaded with a circular walking route designed so Rob and Katy can enjoy their planting. The middle terrace is a productive zone, where we built generous raised beds for vegetables and herbs. The top level will be developed in 2026, continuing the same approach of reuse, low impact, and sensitivity to place.
The result is a garden that feels deeply rooted in its setting, balancing productivity, wildlife value, and authenticity; a true reflection of the way Rob and Katy live and care for their home.
