Churchfield Lane
Design
An Arts & Crafts–inspired courtyard garden designed for entertaining, rich planting, and year-round colour, where traditional principles are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

This courtyard garden was designed as a richly planted space for entertaining and everyday use, with a strong emphasis on colour, structure, and year-round interest. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, the layout uses abundant planting and clearly defined garden rooms, translated into a contemporary context.
Evergreen structural planting provides enclosure and organisation, allowing seasonal planting to deliver colour, texture, and movement throughout the year. A layered palette of perennials and grasses creates visual richness within a compact footprint, while also supporting insects and other garden wildlife.
Materials were selected for their honesty and tactile quality, referencing Arts & Crafts principles while remaining firmly modern in their detailing. A bespoke pergola supports wisteria and shelters a Lutyens-style bench, forming a key feature within the garden and reinforcing its sense of enclosure.
A bespoke water feature introduces gentle sound and movement, helping to soften the space and mask surrounding noise. Subtle, integrated lighting allows the garden to be enjoyed into the evening, with planting, circulation routes, and a stone fire pit carefully lit to create a comfortable atmosphere after dark.
A small outdoor cooking area and raised herb garden complete the design, supporting relaxed entertaining and day-to-day use. The result is a courtyard garden that balances structure with informality, and traditional design principles with contemporary living.
