Wear Bay Road

A shady, triangular plot in Folkestone reimagined as an exotic retreat; dramatic planting and bold foliage meet sleek, contemporary detailing for escape.

This garden began as a challenging brief: an awkward triangular shape, overlooked on all sides, and north-facing with limited sun. The vision was to transform these constraints into an opportunity, creating an exotic, immersive space that feels like an escape from its surroundings.

Massive foliage from Tetrapanax, Fatsia, Musa basjoo, and tree ferns establishes bold structure, while layers of hostas, ferns, and Zantedeschia aethiopica enrich the shaded ground plane. Swathes of Hakonechloa add movement and softness, while climbers blur the garden’s boundaries and heighten the sense of enclosure. Together, the planting creates a rich tapestry of texture, scale, and seasonal change.

Contemporary touches - black timber decking and clay pavers - provide a sleek counterpoint to the planting, anchoring the design in a balance of structure and nature. The result is a garden that feels both contemporary and timeless, proving that even shaded, overlooked spaces can be transformed into places of escape and immersion.
